Cochineal

Cochineal [E120] is a deep red dye made from crushed insects of the same name. Other synonyms for it include Carmine, Crimson Lake, Cochineal, Natural Red 4, C.I. 75470 . As it is made from insects , many vegetarians/vegans wish to not eat it and should be avoided if so. Carmine is used as a food dye in many different products such as juice, ice cream, yogurt, and candies, eyeshadow, lipstick, etc. It has been known to cause severe allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock in some people.
